Make the world better with a sweater

Are you wearing a Christmas jumper for a great cause?
Today Friday the 12th of December is officially Christmas Jumper Day and raises vital funds for Save the Children UK.
The concept is very simple. You wear a festive jumper and you make a donation. Suggested donations are £2 for adults and £1 for children but you can give as much as you like.
You can wear an old jumper, buy one, make one or borrow one. You can get involved as an individual, a family, a group of colleagues, friends or bloggers!
There are a variety of ways to get your money to Save the Children UK. One of the easiest is to text JUMPER to 70050 to make a £2 donation.

A £2 donation could pay for potentially life-saving antibiotics to treat 3 babies with infections.

For every donation made, the UK Government has agreed to match it effectively doubling the level of donations.
You really can make the world better with a sweater and what better time to do this than in the traditional season of goodwill to others?

Look Out For Each Other

We are more than halfway through Road Safety Week and so far it has been a huge success in TBR Global and the local schools we have been working with.

Yesterday we attended St Rose of Lima Primary school in Glasgow to see how they were getting on with making their pupils and parents more aware of the dangers on the road.

The pupils managed to get over 200 people to sign the Brake Pledge to say they will slow down on the roads and look out for each other.  Also during their lessons in class the carried out various workshops to learn more about the key issues.

MSP Paul Martin came along yesterday to see the children's work and to be the last person to sign the Brake Pledge in St Rose of Lima.

As a reward for all the children's hard work TBR Global arranged for one of our chauffeur to go along and park the car in the playground so all the children could have a look inside and find out about any important people who had been in that car.

But our work for Brake is not over yet as we are now getting ready to do some fundraising in the TBR Global office tomorrow.

TBR Global HR Interview

Susan Knox our HR manager has been part of the TBR team for over three years now and has over ten years’ experience in human resources.  With the TBR Global team growing at such a rapid rate we wanted to catch up with Susan and find out what she looks for in new employees.

Thanks Susan for giving up some of your time, we know how busy you are so we are going to ask you just five questions.  It’s now our turn to interview you.

1)      With you receiving so many different applications everyday what makes a CV stand out on your desk?

A structured CV for me is always a good sign. It also stands out to me if an individual has tailored their application for the position they have applied for, rather than sending a generic CV with irrelevant information.

A strong personal statement will stand out but remember to be succinct with this.

2)      Do you have to have past experience in the industry to work for TBR?

Personally before joining TBR Global Ltd I had no experience of working within the transport industry.  Depending on the role we are recruiting industry experience is not always essential, as long as you have drive, ambition and are willing to learn you can be successful at TBR Global.

3)      How much research do you expect someone to do on TBR before their interview?

I would expect someone to have taken the time to look through the company website to gain an understanding of what TBR Global specialise in.

The tips I would give as are follows;
·         Company History
·         Find out what we do
·         Why we do it
·         Our culture and environment (core values)
·         Current Events/ Clients

Remember learning about the company is also a great way to tailor your interview as you can give examples of areas where your experience could be useful.

4)      At the end of an interview when you ask “Do you have any questions”, what do you like to hear?

I think it’s always good when an individual asks about training and where their role would fit in with the overall company goals.  I like it when people are keen to learn about the culture and want to understand more about the working environment.

5)      Any other tips for people wanting to work for TBR Global?

Some of the key strengths we look for would be as follows;

       ·         Outstanding attention to detail
       ·         Hard working
       ·         Team Player
       ·         Focused
       ·         Excellent communication
       ·         Good IT skills

      TBR are obsessed with quality and we want all staff to be trained to become industry experts allowing for the production of top quality work.

Thanks for your time Susan!

I'm sure Susan has some horror/funny interview stories to tell us but we will leave that till another blog.

Brake launches ‘look out for each other’ campaign as extent of selfish driving across UK is revealed

Road safety charity Brake is today launching a campaign calling on all road users to look out for each other, to help stop the five deaths and 61 serious injuries that happen every day on UK roads, and particularly to protect people on foot and bike. The call comes at the start of Road Safety Week, coordinated by Brake, during which police across the country will be stepping up traffic enforcement to deter and catch drivers putting others at risk.
As part of the campaign, Brake and partners RSA and Specsavers are today (17 Nov) revealing statistics showing shocking numbers of UK drivers senselessly risking lives by flouting traffic laws. Almost one million fixed penalty notices were issued for 'careless driving' and speeding offences in 2013 –almost two a minute. 950,505 were for speeding and 17,483 for careless driving (a fixed penalty newly introduced in August 2013). Embargoed figures are available by region and postcode, including the top 10 worst postcode areas.
This lack of patience and consideration towards other road users can and does result in tragedy (see case studies below). It can also stop the most vulnerable from exercising their right to healthy, active, sustainable travel. Results of Brake's survey of 5,000 primary school children, released today, show:
  • two thirds (67%) think roads in their community can be dangerous for walking and cycling;
  • two in five (41%) say they have been hit or nearly hit by a vehicle while on foot or bike.
That's why Brake is calling on all road users to look out for each other, and particularly urging drivers to protect people on foot and bike – by slowing down to 20mph in communities, looking longer and taking it slow at junctions and bends, and giving people plenty of room and consideration. See below for more advice and facts showing why these steps are important.
Members of the public can show their support for the look out for each other campaign by:

  • showing their support on social media using hashtags, #RoadSafetyWeek and #LookOutForEachOther (@Brakecharity, www.facebook.com/brakecharity);
  • going to www.roadsafetyweek.org.uk to make the Brake Pledge and find out how they can support Brake;
  • asking their MP to sign Early Day Motion 462 in support of Road Safety Week.

Julie Townsend, deputy chief executive, Brake, said: "When drivers use roads without care for others the consequences can be tragic and horrific – people killed and badly injured, lives ruined forever, because of a moment of impatience or selfishness. At Brake we witness the suffering that results, daily, through our work supporting people affected by road death and injury. And there are wider consequences if we don't look out for each other on roads – people afraid to walk and cycle or let their kids walk and cycle, and unable to get out and enjoy their community and live active lifestyles. That's why, instead of making our streets stressful, risky places, we're asking all road users to look out for and protect each other, particularly the most vulnerable – that means drivers sticking to 20 or below in towns and villages, looking carefully at junctions, and being considerate. Ultimately, we're all just human beings trying to get around, with equal right to use the roads, not competing tribes."
Chief Constable Suzette Davenport, the Association of Chief Police Officers' national lead for roads policing, added: "Our officers and staff do a vital job in enforcing important safety laws and protecting the public on the roads. Road Safety Week is a great opportunity for forces and partners to engage with their local communities to deliver important road safety messages and undertake enforcement activities in support of Brake's week."

How far would you go for your clients??

Last week, Andrés Gomis, Account Manager in Spain, attended a client meeting in his homeland.

As well as presenting to his clients on the benefits of TBR and training them on our system, he took TBR branding and Corporate identity to a new level by baking a traditional tuna pie for the team.

Everyone was glad Andres didn’t go too far and use purple colouring to represent our global brand.
